AARON PARKS recently pulled a man from a burning vehicle, saving his life. Encountering a wreck at 3 a.m. on the Powhite Parkway in Richmond October 26, 2014, Parks heard the man screaming as fire engulfed the vehicle. Parks grabbed a hammer from his trunk, smashed the sunroof, and pulled the man to safety with help from his friend Mike Olsen. The man was covered in oil and badly hurt. Parks estimated that there was no more than 15 seconds to spare before the flames would have overcome the man. Within a minute or two, a small explosion further engulfed the vehicle. BRIAN McVEY participated in the Anglican Alliance Consultation on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury's personal envoy to the Holy See, Archbishop Sir David Moxon, at the Vatican November 2-8, 2014. The purpose of the consultation was to understand approaches in the Anglican Communion and to define a road map for a Communion-wide response in prevention, rescue, care and support for survivors, among other work.The Archbishop of Canterbury and His Holiness gave their joint blessing to the ecumenical effort and interfaith initiative the Global Freedom Network, launched in Rome.McVey was one of twenty participants who are actively involved in the effort to stop slavery.The purpose of the consultation was to learn about the work of churches around the Anglican Communion in tackling modern slavery and human trafficking. The group will reflect on the most effective approaches and agree on recommendations for a Communion-wide response. These will focus on the prevention of trafficking and slavery, protection and support for survivors, prosecution of perpetrators, and policy and advocacy work with governments and the private sector. The Consultation is tasked specifically with crafting a response to human trafficking in the following areas: Prevention at the parish and community level; Policy and advocacy on legislation and action by governments, private sector, and etc.; Protection, care and support and empowerment for survivors; Prosecution of perpetrators, including work with police and the judiciary; Participation in the movement by churches and communities. Rev. McVey first became aware of the issue of modern slavery during the fall of 2007 as part of his ministry as rector at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Davenport, Iowa, and he was named an Episcopal Church Fellow in the spring of 2011 for his efforts to help awaken his parish and the wider Church to the problem, as well as its call to release all those enslaved. In March 2013, McVey was one of the participants in the church-wide conversation hosted by the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Katharine Jefferts-Schori.McVey has spoken extensively about the problem of modern slavery in provincial trainings, church settings, colleges and universities, as well as business forums, sharing the stories of those enslaved in our midst, as well as the stories of those who use them.McVey assumed his duties as rector of Church of the Advent, Nashville, on January 1. | 2014-10-28 00:31:10
